How Much Local History Do You Know?
Arlington, Kansas, was founded in 1877 and takes its name from Arlington, Massachusetts. Just a year later, the town established its first post office in February 1878, marking the beginning of a close-knit and enduring community. Though small, Arlington has played a meaningful role in the region’s history and development.
In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main line running from Herington through Arlington to Pratt. By 1888, this route extended as far as Liberal, and eventually continued to Tucumcari, New Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. Over the years, the line passed through several hands and became known locally as the “Rock Island,” a name that residents still use today despite changes in ownership.
Arlington has long been recognized for its peaceful, neighborly atmosphere. In 1980, the town was featured by the Associated Press for having never recorded a murder in its history. At the time, the police chief, Ralph Almquist — who became the town’s first full-time law enforcement officer in 1974 — proudly attributed the town’s safety to its strong sense of community and local vigilance. Arlington continues to embody the quiet charm and safety that make small-town Kansas special.
