A Brief History of Cleveland

Cleveland’s story begins in 1879, when the town was platted and named after Cleveland, Ohio. Before that, the area was known as Carvel. Situated near the geographic center of Kingman County, Cleveland once had ambitions of becoming the county seat, and its backers even launched a local newspaper, the Cleveland Star, to help make the case. When the vote came, Kingman won out, and the Cleveland Star eventually relocated there, becoming the Kingman Republican.

Despite losing that bid, Cleveland grew steadily through the late 1800s. By 1887 the town counted around 80 residents and supported a drugstore, a hotel, a livery, a blacksmith, and several other small businesses. A cyclone struck the community that same decade, damaging homes and injuring residents, but the town rebuilt. Rail service arrived in 1890, connecting Cleveland to the wider region and helping sustain its role as a local trade point for area farmers.

By the early 1900s, Cleveland had a school, a church, and two grain elevators, with talk of a large hotel on the horizon. Like many small Kansas farm towns, though, Cleveland’s population gradually declined through the twentieth century. The school closed in 1958, and the church followed in 1967. Today, Cleveland is an unincorporated community best known for its busy grain elevator, a quiet reminder of the agricultural rhythms that still shape life in this part of Kingman County.

Living and Working Southwest of Wichita

Cleveland sits in the heart of south-central Kansas farm country, roughly forty-five minutes southwest of Wichita. This is a region built around wheat, sorghum, and cattle, where families often work the same land their grandparents did. The pace here is unhurried, neighbors know each other by name, and community identity runs deep even in towns too small to appear on most maps.

For residents, that closeness to Wichita means easy access to bigger city amenities: shopping, hospitals, and entertainment, without giving up the wide open skies and low cost of living that come with rural Kansas life. Kingman, the county seat just up the road, serves as the practical hub for daily needs, including groceries, schools, and healthcare. Families in Cleveland and the surrounding countryside enjoy strong agricultural employment, close ties to 4H and FFA programs, and the kind of community events, from county fairs to school sports, that bring small towns together throughout the year.
